Roles and permissions

Give people their positions and standings, and choose what each role can do.

Read the stable’s roles

Admin only

Holding a position gives someone the position’s permissions, on top of what their standing allows. Only people whose position can manage roles and permissions can change roles. In a new stable, that is the Admin.

The Admin position heads the list under Stable admin. It can’t be removed, always has someone in it, and always keeps permission to manage roles and to delete the stable. A new stable has this one position. Press New role to add others, such as Instructor.

  1. Open Manage from the menu and press Roles.
  2. Pick a role in the list: a position, a committee, or Rider · Horse owner · Worker for the standings.
  3. Press See every permission, or Edit permissions if you can change the role, to read what it can do.

Give someone a position

People who can manage roles and permissions

A person can hold more than one position. The Admin position can never be left empty. For a committee, the people who hold the position that runs it can also add and remove its members.

  1. Pick the position in the list.
  2. Under Who has this role, choose the member in Add a person.
  3. Press Add.
  4. To take someone off, press the cross beside their name and confirm Remove.

Change what a role can do

People who can manage roles and permissions

Manage roles and permissions cannot be given to another role. Only someone who can delete the stable can give Delete the stable to a position or take it away, and the Admin always keeps it.

Permissions are sorted under Admin, People, Horses, Riding, Barn, Events and news, and Money. One you can’t change for this role is greyed out with a padlock, and the reason is listed under the permissions.

A person has everything their standing allows plus everything their positions allow. When someone in a position is a Horse owner, a Worker or a Rider, each permission they already have that way is marked with their first name, like “Sam has this”. They keep those even if they’re unticked on the position.

What the Rider, Horse owner and Worker standings can do is fixed. A committee can never have a permission its position does not have.

  1. Pick the role in the list.
  2. Press Edit permissions.
  3. Tick what people with the role can do, and untick what they cannot. The question mark beside each permission says what it allows.
  4. Press the Save button under the list.

Create a position or a committee

People who can manage roles and permissions

A committee belongs to a position. It can never have a permission its position does not have. The people who hold that position can change the committee.

Everyone in the stable can see the committee and who is on it on the About page, under the card of each person who holds its position.

Start from copies the permissions a role has in a new stable, not its name, its description or its people. Manage roles and permissions and Delete the stable are never copied.

  1. Press New role.
  2. Under Kind, pick A position, or A committee of a position.
  3. Type the Name and, if you like, a description.
  4. For a position, pick a role under Start from to begin with its permissions, or leave No permissions yet.
  5. For a committee, choose The position that runs it.
  6. Press Create role, then give the role its permissions and its people.

Rename or remove a role

People who can manage roles and permissions

A role can be removed only when nobody holds it, and a position only when it runs no committees. The Admin position and the Rider, Horse owner and Worker standings cannot be removed.

  1. Press the role’s name or description to change it.
  2. To remove the role, press Remove role and confirm.

Change someone’s standing

People who can administer everyone in the stable

Every member has exactly one standing, so adding a person to one moves them out of the one they had. A Horse owner can add their own horses, write care notes about them, and book riding times. A Worker can read and write care notes and use the feeding board. A Rider can book riding times.

People who join the stable start as Riders. Moving someone needs the Administer everyone in the stable permission. In a new stable the Admin has it.

  1. Pick Rider · Horse owner · Worker at the bottom of the list.
  2. Open Horse owner, Worker or Rider.
  3. Choose the person in Add a person and press Add.

See the stable as a role sees it

Admin only

The View as button appears only on roles whose permissions you already have, and on a position only if you hold one. Committees have no View as.

You stay signed in as yourself, and you can do only what the role allows. Anything you change while viewing is really changed.

  1. Pick a role in the list, or pick Rider · Horse owner · Worker for a standing.
  2. Press View as.
  3. Use the app. The banner at the top shows whose view you are in.
  4. Press Exit preview in the banner to go back to your own view.
